Quito
Quito is the capital of Ecuador and is a centre of activity for tourists. It is situated 10,000 feet above sea level. This city is divided into three parts: Old City, North and South. The tourist district is located in the North Quadrant. As with every tourist attraction, there are many Quito Ecuador hotels in the city.
When coming into Quito, you will enter via Aeropuerto Internacional Mariscal Sucre. This airport serves many different ports of call with flights originating in such places as Atlanta, Houston and Miami. Airlines such as Tame, Copa, KLM, Continental and Delta for starters, fly here. Taxi rides to the tourist area are $5.00. If you are taking the bus, you will need to exit the airport, cross the street and board a bus with J.L Mera on the placard. The cost to do this is $.25. One place to see when in Quito is the Jacchigua Ecuadorian Ballet. This ballet company was created by Jose Vincente Mantilla, from Theatre Bolivar. This ballet is located in the National Theatre Sucre and has been here for over 17 years. This is the culture of Ecuador, as expressed in dance. Some of the dances include: Andean Sensitivity, Deer Hunt, and Huasipungo to name a few of the dances performed here. Performances are every Wednesday and runs for over two hours. There are several Quito Ecuador hotels that are located in the area in close proximity to the Ballet.
Cotopaxi National Park is another place to see when in Quito. This National Park was created in 1979 and boasts 33,393 hectares and is between 3,500 and 5, 897 feet above sea level. This natural park contains an active volcano that has erupted since 1534. It has many different sites such as Lagoon of Limpiopungo and Rumiñahui, Sincholagua and Morurco Volcanoes. To get here by car, you need to drive south from Quito to Machachi Then go 20 km to El Pedregal. Some of the flora and fauna that you can see are moriño, pumamaquis, deer and wolves for starters. The zoo was opened to the public in 1997 and sits on 12 hectares of land in Guayllabamba. 180 animals make their home in the zoo. Some of the mammals represented are the jaguar, Moor wolf, Great African Lion, Bear with Spectacles and monkeys. Birds include: Eagles, Andean Condor, toucan and macaw. One reptile of note seen here is the Galapagos tortoise.
