The culture of Galapagos Islands with special reference to Ecuador has a unique theme and is appreciated by people from all walks of life. The Mestizo, who happen to be a mix of European and American backgrounds comprise a majority of the population. The slaves of Africa also contribute to the population. Culture of Galapagos Islands is based on indigenous customs nonetheless most people in Ecuador are the followers of Christianity.

Religion In Galapagos Islands


Culture of Galapagos is divided on the basis of religion and there are various religious groups which dwell on separate surrounding and take pride in their sect. Religion in Ecuador has caused immense tension and has also led to sporadic bursts of violence between two or more sects. Guayaquilenos and Quitenos are two major religious groups in Ecuador which are forever at loggerheads with each other and this in turn has affected the economy of the nation. Culture of Galapagos Islands is highly influenced by the family structure and most Ecuadorians live in either a nuclear or extended families. In Ecuador, contrary to the western culture, the elderly are given due respect and are kept with one or more children. In recent times, the influx of old age homes has increased at a rapid pace. Godparents in Ecuador play an important role in resolving family issues and are therefore given due importance.

There are two types of marriages in Ecuador. The first is the civil marriage wherein the marriage has been approved from both parties and the second is Free Union, wherein the marriage ceremony is held without an official stamp. Here, the richer groups adopt the methodology of the west and live lavishly while the poor make do with what they can afford.

The Position Of Women In Galapagos Islands


The culture of a nation is greatly influenced by the social set up and if we take the example of Ecuadorian culture, we would find that the lives of both men as well as women are divided and are known to follow two separate paths. The women are generally responsible for bringing up children and doing household work while the men folk work to earn money. After the Eloy Alfaro revolution, women have the right to vote and have hence started leading an independent life. As compared to boys, girls are more protected and are stated to enjoy parties when they turn fifteen.

Culture of Galapagos Islands is also influenced by its sporting activities. While football is considered the favorite pastime, volleyball and bullfighting are also followed with zeal. As compared to the western rules, the ball in a game of volleyball is heavier and there are just three players per team. Bullfighting is a result of Spanish colonization and is practiced in the festival of Quito. In the Corrida de Toros, bullfighters assemble from all across the globe to showcase their talent and skills.

Entertainment In Galapagos Islands


You can never get bored in the island of Galapagos. There are numerous fun activities, with fishing being the national pastime. There are numerous rivers in the islands and people have been known to catch bull sharks in shallow waters. Ecuador is also known for its fond liking for a game of darts and card games. You also have the opportunity to watch children playing hopscotch, marbles, skipping ropes and enjoying various carnivals and festivals. Although there are no specific carnivals, you would notice mask festivals being organized on a periodical basis.

Cuisine In The Islands


Culture of Galapagos Islands is also influenced by its cuisine. The main meal is considered to be the lunch as compared to dinner in the west and people who live near the coasts are fond of fish, beans and plantains. People who live in the mountains are usually fond of meat, white hominy moat and rice. Ecuador cuisine is famous for patacones, made of fried plantains, and llapingachos, a dish made from potatoes.

Languages Spoken In The Island


Majority of Ecuadorians speak the Spanish dialect. At the same time, it has been noted that Quechua, a national dialect, is also fairly popular. Costenos tend to speak faster than an ordinary individual while the Serranos are known for their slow and soft speech.
